ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH

Friday, February 7, 2020

Dear Members and Friends of Zion,

God is not fair! Yeah, that’s the point. He doesn’t give us what we deserve. He gives gifts. Who pays everyone that works for them the same, even if they work different hours? In the parable of the workers in the vineyard, Jesus gives us an illustration that shows just how generous God’s grace is: He doesn’t give what is “fair.” He gives what is “righteous.” That is, He gives us what Jesus has earned: a full day’s pay, no matter how long we’ve worked; to put it another way: forgiveness, life, and salvation! Nope! Not fair at all! That’s Good News. We’ll hear all about it this weekend as we celebrate Septuagesima, the “Almost 70 days” until Easter. It’s the beginning of the Pre-Lent Sundays.

If you or someone you know is hospitalized, please let me know! I know that sometimes a trip to the ER ends up in being sent home quickly. But you never know and if someone is admitted, I’m happy to pay them a visit in the hospital and bring them Jesus’ gifts. So, please, if you or a family member is hurt or hospitalized, please do let me know! Pastoral care is part of my job!

Here’s a reminder and repeat of something I mentioned last week: We have a couple of months until our school’s FAMILY FUN NIGHT but we’re already beginning our preparations. We’re asking folks to help us collect DONATIONSof goods and services from local businesses for the Silent Auction at Family Fun Night. If you know of someone who owns or manages a business that would be willing to help us out, ask them! We have donation letters available in the Office to make it easy to ask! Thanks for your help in getting our big event ready.Brandy will be out of the Office all next week. She’s taking a well deserved vacation with family! Susan and Pam will be helping in the office so if you need anything, you can still call or stop by. Have a good time and safe travels, Brandy!

What if God’s goodness meant that even a worse sinner than you could be saved? Would that make you happy or angry? Hopefully happy! No matter what our circumstances, we should always rejoice in the Lord’s grace and mercy to ourselves and others! He’s a generous Lord who loves to take what is His and lavish it upon us! See you for exactly that in the Divine Service!

In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
