Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Wind! Flames! Bunches of languages! What’s going on? Does the Holy Spirit have their attention? Then listen to the Apostle Peter. Now that the Spirit has their attention, they hear a sermon that proclaims Jesus who died and rose again and who washes our sins away in the waters of Holy Baptism. It’s Pentecost on Sunday. Pentecost reminds us that the Lord established His church for the sake of the whole world. The church, the body of Christ, exists in this world to announce the Good News that Jesus has triumphed over sin and death. In a world full of selfishness and idolatry and the fear of death, the Christian church proclaims loud and clear: Jesus died for your sins. You are forgiven. Jesus rose and defeated death. You will rise again. The church isn’t just one more earthly institution. It’s not just another group or club that people join. It is the living Body of Christ in this dying world. Jesus has sent His Spirit to make you a part of this Body and the work we do of proclaiming the wonderful works of Him who has called us from darkness to light. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from or even what language you speak: this Good News is for you! It’s for everyone! That’s Pentecost this week!

The lesson of the Tower of Babel is that when we want to make a name for ourselves, the Lord will dash our self-centered plans to pieces and confuse our efforts. The message of Pentecost is that all people, regardless of language, have been given Jesus’ Name to call upon and be saved. Mankind is always trying to find a way to exalt itself. The Good News of the preaching of the church is that Christ has given us His Name and that Name is for the whole world to hear and believe in. It is by His Name that we are saved. So the Spirit gathers us in the Lord’s house to once again call on that Name and rejoice that we are saved! See you in the Divine Service!

In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
