Church Email News – March 1, 2024

Dear Fellow-Redeemed of the Lord,

The works of the devil aren’t just in the possession of people. This Sunday, Jesus throws a demon out of a man who could not speak. The devil’s works often include lies put in the lips of God’s enemy. When Jesus demonstrates His power over the evil one, His enemies accuse Him of driving out demons by “Beelzebub.” In other words, Jesus was just doing tricks with the devil’s power. What nonsense! Jesus explains that the devil doesn’t cast himself out. That would make no sense. Rather, Jesus does His casting out by the finger of God, the power of the Almighty. Very often, Jesus’ battle with the devil takes on the form of Him having to speak the Truth to the enemies of the Lord who speak the devil’s lies. Ironically, Jesus frees a man who was mute from the power of Satan, but He has to shut the mouths of the ones who can talk so they stop telling stupid lies! That’s this Sunday, the Third Sunday in Lent!

SCOUT SUNDAY
This Sunday we’ll be highlighting Zion’s Cub Scout Pack 214. Say hello to them as they greet you on the way into church and stop by their table to grab some of their delicious popcorn!

Learning the Faith – A look at the ways that Jesus demonstrates He is really the Christ and the Son of God.

Tuesdays at 10:30 AM – Reading the Book of Exodus. God saves His people and keeps His promises!

YOUTH GROUPS THIS SUNDAY
We’re back to first Sunday Youth Group schedule. We’ll meet this Sunday: High School Youth at 4:30pm and Middle School Youth at 6pm.

LENTEN SUPPERS AND MIDWEEK WORSHIP

Join us each Wednesday in Lent at 5:30 PM for a meal before worship. Suppers are hosted by different boards, committees, and members of the church and will continue each Wednesday through March 20. Then take some extra time to receive the Lord’s gifts in the Divine Service at 7 PM.

This week’s dinner is hosted by school parents.

LENTEN SPEAKER SERIES-“TRANSGENDER CHRISTIAN: AN OXYMORON?”

On Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16 we’ll be hearing from Greg Eilers on the topic of transgender Christians. Greg is a retired Missouri Synod pastor who struggled with this very thing. He’ll give us a biblical and compassionate look at how to understand and love our neighbors who are transgender.

What this Seminar is NOT: This is NOT a presentation on agreeing with the world and being “inclusive” in the way the world talks. It is NOT a presentation on the details of gender confirmation surgery. It is NOT a political rally for or against something.

What this Seminar IS: This seminar is a chance to learn what “transgender” is, why it occurs, and how we as Christians can love others with the genuine love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. It will help us to learn to speak with others with the love of Jesus and to actually put into practice what we say we believe, namely, that Jesus really died and rose for ALL people.

Detailed information about the event and the speaker is available on the table in the narthex. You can also download the flyer at THIS LINK.

If you’re planning to attend, please register for a (free) ticket online HERE. (You can also call the Church Office to reserve a spot). This will help us with planning for food for the event.

TACOS AND TRIVIA
Our school’s “Tacos and Trivia” night is on Saturday, April 13, 6-9pm. Gather a team of your family and friends to purchase a table and be part of the party. Food will be provided (BYOB), there will be basket raffles of items from local businesses, and prizes for best decorated team tables. It’s going to be a fun night to benefit our school as we raise money for additional swings and playground equipment. Registration forms are available on the table in the narthex. Tables of up to 8 are $150 and Individual Registrations are $25 (and we’ll put you at a table with others).

As we continue through Lent and see the Lord’s battle against the evil one, there is one thing for certain: It’s not an equal match! The devil is not the bad force equal to the good. He is a fallen angel who has lost his place. His rage gets directed at us. So Jesus fights for us and wins! Now we have the Lord’s victory to throw in the devil’s face. Jesus’ victory over Satan is your victory over Him. The evil foe has no power over you! See you in the Divine Service.

In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
