Church News March 3, 2019

Dear Members and Friends of Zion,

For two weeks we’ve heard that God’s kingdom doesn’t make sense. He’s not fair. He’s wasteful. Now we hear Jesus talking about being betrayed and treated shamefully and whipped and killed. That really doesn’t make sense! It’s not the thing you’d expect and the disciples didn’t understand. But a blind man gets it. He knows that only Jesus can save Him and he won’t be quiet until Jesus does! We’ll hear about all this and how it’s Good News this weekend as we celebrate the Sunday called Quinqugesima (fifty days util Easter).

You know what we haven’t done in awhile? Had a FAMILY GAME NIGHT! So we will THIS SUNDAY, at 4pm. Bring your favorite board and card games and a snack to share. It will be a great way to have some fun and do something during this never-ending winter cold!

Wednesday is ASH WEDNESDAY. If you’d like ashes earlier in the day, you can stop by for our School Chapel at 11am and receive ashes along with our students. Otherwise, we’ll have Divine Service at 7pm with Imposition of Ashes included in the service. We’ll also have our first LENTEN SUPPER at 6pm. Every Wednesday during Lent, we’ll have a meal at 6pm followed by service (Evening Prayer with Communion) at 7pm. I hope you’ll take time out to heard God’s Word and receive Jesus’ gifts during these 40 days leading to Holy Week and Easter.

We have all kinds of other activities coming up over the next few weeks and months. There’s a list of dates you should save in the NewsNotes this week but I’ll highlight a few important ones coming up soon.

NEXT SATURDAY (March 9), swing by McHenry High School’s West Campus between 9am and 2pm for the McHenry Chamber Expo. Zion will have a table there so come by and say, “Hi!” and hang out with us!

On Sunday, March 24, we are going to have two back-to-back VOTERS MEETINGS. (There will NOT be Learning the Faith that Sunday). The purpose of the meetings is to review proposed Bylaw changes and then to vote on them. But according to the Bylaws, we need two meetings to accomplish that! Our Constitution Committee has been hard at working making some very positive changes that will help streamline the way we do things and encourage members to participate in our life together. Please plan on attending!

Jesus is getting His disciples ready to witness the things He will undergo for the salvation of the world. We get to hear those words and prepare too.

See you in the Divine Service this weekend!

In Christ, Pastor Buetow
