Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Love your neighbor as yourself. But who is your neighbor? That’s what the young man asks Jesus because he thought he was pretty good about loving his neighbor. Then Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan and flips the question around: “Who was neighbor to the man in the ditch?” That’s what this self-righteous young man needed to hear: Not that he’s saved by how good he is to others, but that Jesus is the neighbor who saves him from when he’s lying in the ditch of sin. Of course, that’s Good News for us because Jesus saves us the same way. But He’s also teaching us to be neighbors to those in need, even if they can’t pay us back. Jesus is the Good Samaritan to you and you are a Good Samaritan to those around you, whoever they are in your life. This is our Gospel as we celebrate the 13th Sunday after Trinity.

LCMS DISASTER RELIEF:
It’s certainly been a whilrwind of natural disasters lately from fires to storms all around our country and the world. LCMS Disaster Relief is on the front lines in many places to help those who have been displaced or are in need. If you’d like to help out, you can make an offering directly to LCMS Disaster Relief RIGHT HERE. Click the “Give” button or select a particular area to give.

The young man who talked with Jesus sees the Law and Commandments as rules to follow to prove he’s a righteous person. Jesus teaches him that the real purpose of the Law is to show us what love is: love of God and love for others. Jesus fulfills that Law by loving the Father unto death for sinners and loving you by saving you from your sins. The Spirit takes that love of Jesus and works in us love for others so that we may see in them that they are our neighbor whom the Lord has given us to love. See you at church or Fish Lake or online this weekend!

In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
