Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

When Jesus turns the water into wine at the wedding in Cana, His disciples saw His sign and believed in Him. There’s another result, though. The master of the feast told the bridegroom how surprised he was that he had saved the best wine for last. Jesus’ miracle shows His glory, but it also makes the bridegroom look good. For whatever reason, they ran out of wine: that would make the groom look terrible. What a bad wedding that would be! But Jesus makes the groom look good and saves the party! If we were to be judged on our behaviors and our failings, we would be in big trouble. But part of what salvation means is not only that our sins are forgiven but that Jesus makes us look good, too! That is, He gives us a reason to see ourselves as God sees us: forgiven and holy and righteous and pure. Jesus takes what looks awful in you and makes you look great! He does a “water into wine” miracle in in us when He makes us a new creation in the waters of our baptism and brings us to the flowing wine of His Holy Supper. That’s this week as we celebrate the Second Sunday after the Epiphany, with the great story of the Wedding at Cana!

Things are otherwise pretty quiet around church. Here’s the usual information we send out each week:

Water into wine. Jesus made the water, the grapes, the wine. He is Lord of all creation. He doesn’t do this sign to show off, however, but to show us that He brings us new life. From font to altar. From the baptism in the Jordan to His blood shed on Calvary. The water into wine shows us in many ways how the Lord makes us a part of His new creation, making all things new, renewing life and giving us the hope of the life to come. See you in the Divine Service!

In Christ,

Pastor Buetow
