Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Did you ever wonder what the Holy Spirit looks like? Sure, He appeared at Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan river when He descended as a dove. But how do we recognize the Spirit today? When your pastor baptizes, forgives you, preaches a sermon, and gives you the Body and Blood of Jesus, that’s the Holy Spirit at work. When you’re reading your Bible or listening to God’s Word, that’s the Holy Spirit at work. In other words, you can identify the Spirit where the gifts Jesus gives are. Water, Word, Body and Blood. When Jesus gives a gift, the Spirit is there working in our hearts to believe and trust in our Savior. Jesus didn’t go away and leave us to ourselves. He sends the Spirit whom He calls the “Helper” or “Comforter.” The Spirit is the One who comes alongside through God’s Word to remind us that we belong to the Lord, that our sins are forgiven, and that we have everlasting life. The Christian faith is not, “Jesus did His part” so now “do your part.” The Christian faith is that Jesus did the work of saving the world by His death and resurrection and the Spirit’s job is making sure that Good News is heard and believed. Not by our own reason or strength but by the Spirit’s working through the Word we can say that Jesus is our Savior and that we have eternal life. We’ll hear all about it this Fifth Sunday of Easter coming up.

The world doesn’t know about the things of God. So Jesus sends the Spirit to preach through the Word to the world. Sin. Righteousness. Judgement. These all have to do with Jesus. So the Spirit’s job is to deliver Jesus to the world. The Spirit delivers Jesus to you. Forgiveness of sins. The righteousness of Jesus Himself. The judgement against sins paid for by Jesus and we are spared because He is our Savior. See you in the Divine Service this week!

In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
