Dear Redeemed of the Lord,

This week we’ll be observing the Festival of the Holy Cross and our celebration will include the use of our new processional crucifix! If you’ve talked to me about it, you know I’m pretty excited that we’ll have this beautiful piece of liturgical art to use in our services! There is nothing more horrifying or beautiful at the same time than to see the Son of God crucified for the sins of the world. It is horrifying because it shows the depths of our sins in that the Son of God died because of them. Yet even greater is the beauty in that He shows God’s love in willingly going to the cross to die for our sins and secure our salvation and everlasting life. I do realize that art can be somewhat subjective. Not everyone will like the “style” of the art and not everyone will like the idea of a “crucifix” as opposed to just a cross. The beauty of this crucifix is that it shows so much theology, so much of what we believe and know to be true from God’s Word. My hope and prayer is that as we see it in God’s house, we will see the everlasting beauty of the “Lamb who was slain” who reigns above heaven and earth, the Savior who has won for us eternal salvation, the Son of God whose death and resurrection make certain our forgiveness and standing before God. Thank you to all the members and friends of Zion who have made this 145th anniversary gift possible. Let our Lord always be glorified as we constantly proclaim Jesus Christ crucified! Holy Cross Day is September 14 but we’ll be observing it on both Sunday and Wednesday. The services will both include the blessing of the processional crucifix for use in the Lord’s house. See you in church!

LEARNING THE FAITH – KNOW YOUR BIBLE!
It’s time to get back into God’s Word. Young and old, parents and children, and anyone who wants to brush up on their basic knowledge of the Bible – God’s Word. We’ll be getting back into it THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 at LEARNING THE FAITH, right after worship (around 10:15am). Join us. Bring your parents, bring your kids, bring your friends, and bring your questions. ALL AGES are welcome and encouraged to attend! (You are welcome to bring a snack as we are not yet providing coffee and donuts at this time.)
FALL BONFIRE
We’re going to have a Bonfire on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1 at 7pm down by the picnic pavilion. Everyone is invited to have some Fall fellowship and fun. We’ll pray Evening Prayer and then enjoy s’mores and hot chocolate. We’ll have rides available for those who need them to the bottom of the hill. Mark your calendar!

MASKS IN WORSHIP
We are once again wearing our masks during worship. At this time there is no restriction on capacity or seating arrangements. Please consider the well-being of your neighbor. Most especially by staying home if you have any symptoms of illness. As always, you can get in touch with me to request a visit if you can’t be in church. Thank you for your patience and understanding and love of neighbor in all of this!

Susan and I will be heading over to Michigan this afternoon to pick up the crucifix from the artist in Grand Rapids. Ed Riojas, who designed and made the crucifix is an artist who is a member of the congregation where I was a member in high school. In fact, he was one of the leaders of my youth group back in the day! Ed has created a lot of art for the church at large, done projects and logos for Higher Things, and is the artist who made the pictures we use on our bulletin covers. I look forward to seeing you Sunday or Wednesday as we celebrate Christ Crucified for Holy Cross Day! The water and blood that flowed from His side on Calvary are the water of the font and the blood of the cup by which Jesus gives us new brith and sustains us in this life of faith. It’s going to be a great celebration of the wonderful gifts of our Savior. See you soon!

In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
