Dear Saints of Jesus,

Sorrow is not forever. Grief isn’t forever. Sadness is not permanent. Our hope as Christians is that the sighs and groans and tears of this life will one day be gone, wiped away. We have this promise from Jesus Himself and it’s guaranteed by His resurrection from the dead. He tells the disciples that they will have sorrow and yet it will turn to joy. When He was taken from them and crucified, nothing but sorrow, sadness, fear, and grief. And then, when He is alive, they have joy that doesn’t end. Such joy that not even persecution or martyrdom can dim the light of their hope and glory in Jesus. That’s the power of Christ’s resurrection from the dead: that sorrow is defeated and can’t last forever. Sorrow will be turned into joy. Let’s hear that Good News again which turns sorrow into joy as we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter this week!

Sorrow to joy is the story of our Christian life in this world. Lots of things cause us sorrow and sadness. Christ’s resurrection to life turns this to joy. It might not always seem evident but the hope and promise of His resurrection from the dead is that one day, all our sorrows will be turned to joy and that joy will never end. We live in this world with good days and bad days, but we look for an eternal home that never passes away. That is Jesus’ promise to you on account of His cross and empty tomb. See you in the Divine Service!

In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
