ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH

Friday, July 12, 2019

Dear Members and Friends of Zion,

“Judge not!” It’s probably the single most known Bible passage by people who don’t know the Bible! It’s often used by those outside the church to tell the people in the church to leave them alone. But Jesus is teaching that to His own people: Do not judge. Be merciful. Here he is teaching us to look within and see the depths of our own sin so that we live in God’s mercy and extend that same mercy and gracious forbearance to others. This is what we’ll hear as we celebrate the Fourth Sunday after Trinity this weekend.

Today marks a special Anniversary. It’s Pastor Loest’s 60th Ordination Anniversary! 60 years as a faithful servant of the Lord! Thanks to the folks who came out to our monthly service at Valley Hi yesterday and were able to stay for awhile afterward and visit with Pastor. He really enjoyed seeing everyone and reminiscing about his years as a pastor! We give thanks for the Lord’s work through his years of ministry to God’s people!

This Sunday at our 8:00 AM BIBLE STUDY, we’re going to begin reading the Book of Exodus.
It’s full of lots of familiar stories: The burning bush; the plagues and Passover; the crossing of the Red Sea; and the golden calf. There’s so much in this book that foreshadows the life of the church since Jesus’ death and resurrection and it will give all kinds of opportunities for discussion of all kinds of topics: everything from the religions to baptism to how we worship. If you’ve never attended Bible Study, or it’s been awhile, please know you’re welcome! Bible Study isn’t a place you have to know a lot; it’s a place where you can learn a lot and ask all the questions you like to help you better understand our Lord’s Word!

We’re planning to walk in the FIESTA DAYS PARADE on SUNDAY, JULY 21 at 1:30 PM. We’d love any and all to join us! Let’s represent our church and school in the community! If you’d like to participate, sign up in the narthex or let pastor know. I’ll have the location and time for lining up by next Friday’s email.

This coming week, we’ll be taking three youth to the HIGHER THINGS CONFERENCE at Concordia University, Mequon, Wisconsin (a little bit north of Milwaukee). We’ll have a week of Worship, learning God’s Word, and Fun! Keep our little band in your prayers as we travel and enjoy the conference!

There’s a great lesson for us in how Joseph deals with his brothers. He could really let them have it for all they did to him. Yet instead he forgives them. That’s all part of being merciful that we’ll hear from God’s Word this weekend.

See you in the Divine Service!

In Christ, Pastor Buetow
