Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Jesus says the “great” commandment is “Love God with your whole heart” and the second is like it, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But what makes the commandment “great” exactly? Because it’s most important? Because it’s the essence or summary of all the commandments? Maybe it’s the “great” commandment because it is the greatest one at showing us what our sins are? How about this: it’s the great commandment because it’s the one that Jesus fulfills. The perfect love of God and others is exactly what Jesus accomplishes by His life, death, and resurrection for sinners. Love God. Love your neighbor. Jesus, who is true God and true man loves His Father above all things and He loves you as Himself and even greater, laying His life down for you. In a world that thinks about religion as mainly “rules,” Jesus shows us that it’s really about love. Loving God. Loving others. God loving you and saving you. That’s this week, the 18th Sunday after Trinity!
ZAP Meeting this Sunday after Early Service
If you’re a ZAP member, here’s your friendly reminder. If you’re not, it’s still a reminder that our Zion Assistance Program is active and helping others in need. If you know of someone who needs help, whatever it is, let them know about ZAP and how we, as the Body of Christ, can help them and thereby love our neighbor.
Our ZAP offering jar is in the narthex! Any amount can help. Don’t forget to give those dollar bills that have a [G]od, [J]esus, or [L]ove on them!
Bowling is Back
If you’d like to bowl at the McHenry Rec. lanes, they are accepting teams. Grab some family members or friends to make a four-person team. Bowling is the first Saturday of each month at 7:00 PM and costs $15 per person. If you want more information, talk to Jeff Foerster.
Trunk Or Treat
Mark your calendar for Sunday, October 25 at Noon. We’ll be hosting Trunk Or Treat in our parking lot. Decorate your vehicle and hand out candy. Invite your friends and their children to join us!
Voters Meeting
Our Fall Voters Meeting is Sunday, November 15 at 9am (Between services; We will not have Bible Study or Learning the Faith that day). The main business is election of officers and board members which was postponed from our May meeting.

LCMS DISASTER RELIEF:
It’s certainly been a whirlwind of natural disasters lately from fires to storms all around our country and the world. LCMS Disaster Relief is on the front lines in many places to help those who have been displaced or are in need. If you’d like to help out, you can make an offering directly to LCMS Disaster Relief RIGHT HERE. Click the “Give” button or select a particular area to give.
As all this Covid stuff drags on and on, and as we get inundated with the election news stuff, this Sunday’s Gospel is a reminder that for Jesus’ disciples, there’s something more important than all of that: the love of God. Yes, our love for Him. More and better, His love for you. And in that, with all the grumpiness and hatred out there, the reminder that for Jesus’ disciples, loving your neighbor is second only to love of God. The Spirit grant that those are our two great desires and works, even as we trust in how Jesus fulfills those Commandments for us. See you this week in the Divine Service!
In Christ,
Pastor Buetow
